The forecast torrential weather was not going to dampen spirits as our members flocked to the Loton Park Estate in Shropshire for the Club’s always highly-anticipated Hill Climb Season Finale. As luck would have it, the storms never materialised and, despite some showers, we were treated to great weekend’s competition with some standout performances throughout the field.

Having been balked on his first timed attempt, the pressure was on favourite Rob Cobden to deliver on the re-run in his Riley Falcon Special – and he did not disappoint, clocking a sensational 66.20 seconds, which with rain-affected afternoon runs, was enough to see him claim the TT Humber Trophy for Fastest Time of Day ahead of an admirable performance by James Baxter in Ben Fidler’s ERA AJM 1 – his first competitive run in the voiturette racer – who was the day’s next Fastest Pre-war Car in 70.64 seconds. Aided by favourable conditions himself, Dougal Cawley’s astonishing 70.85 seconds in the all-action GN/Ford ‘Piglet’ Special gave him the Fastest Vintage Car award whilst Andrew Howe-Davies continued his winning streak following his victory in Prescott in August with another Edwardian Class win in his mighty 1911 Scat Racer. One of the Club’s more unusual awards – the Tidd & Ingham Trophy – is awarded annually to the 10th Slowest Time of the Fastest Runs at Loton Park and, by pure coincidence, was won for a second consecutive year by Club President Tony Stephens in Alisdaire Lockhart’s 1914/18 Vauxhall A/D Type. We are happy to report that no murmurs of ‘spot-fixing’ were heard in the paddock!

Our thanks go to all Competitors, Event Officials and most of all to the volunteer Marshals who helped make the event another stellar success, particularly those who spent much of their time out in the elements. We also thank our team of local members, who do a lot of hard work in preparation of the event and the Baker Brothers for organising another wonderful Hog Roast on Saturday evening – once again, Loton proved itself as one of the top social weekends of the VSCC calendar of events. We already can’t wait for 2014!
