Sun to shine on Brooklands this weekend for the VSCC New Year Driving Tests

Friday 31 January 2014

Following weeks of gloom and rain, forecasts anticipate a day of sunshine at Brooklands Museum in Weybridge Surrey this weekend so why not join us this Sunday 2 February as the birthplace of British Motorsport and Aviation plays host to the VSCC’s annual New Year Driving Tests event.
The team at Brooklands Museum have successfully battled back terrible flooding onsite over the festive season and are ready to welcome the VSCC for the first time in 2014 this weekend, the first of four visits for the Club in its 80th Anniversary Year. The historic venue provides the ideal backdrop for our competitors to brush away the winter cobwebs and, with an entry of 50 Pre-war cars prepared to tackle Tests set around the historic site, including the famous ‘Test Hill’ and the original banking, the day is set to be a fantastic spectacle for all to enjoy.

As with all VSCC events, the competition boasts an eclectic line-up of Pre-war machinery, spanning four decades. John Tarring’s 1908 Humber 10/12 is the elder statesman of the event, the day’s lone Edwardian entry and Andrew Messent’s 1938 Morgan Super Sports a comparatively sprightly youngster. The whole spectrum of Pre-war manufacturers will be on display with Austin, Morris, Riley, Alfa Romeo, MG, Singer, Frazer Nash and Bugatti badges amongst those also represented. Mark Garfitt will be hoping to repeat the success of his last visit, when his 1937 Frazer Nash/BMW 319/55 took 2nd Place overall in the prestigious Brooklands Double Twelve Competition in June last year, boosted by the car’s own history at the venue in period. Competition will be fierce, however, with VSCC Driving Test ‘supremos’ Edmund Burgess (Bugatti T13 Brescia) and Mark Ballard (Frazer Nash Falcon) likely candidates for victory whilst Club President elect Tim Kneller gives a first competitive outing to his 1925 Morris Bullnose Oxford. An ideal introductory discipline to Pre-war motorsport, we are also delighted to welcome more than half dozen of the Club’s younger members – taking advantage of the Club’s special offer for all events of Half-Price entry fees for Under 30s – many of whom sharing cars with family and friends for the event. The Club host four Driving Tests each year; you can read more about our Driving Test events (CLICK HERE).

Spectators are most welcome to attend, access to the Museum site from 9.00am, Morning Tests starting at 10.00am and a Lunch Break approximately 12.45-1.30pm. With the Driving Tests event, catering facilities and the other wonderful exhibits around the Museum, it promises to be a great day for the whole family.
