Capt. Bunting is crowned Queen of the VSCC Lakeland Trial once more

Monday 10 November 2014

Yet another commanding performance by Frazer Nash Car Club Captain, Louise Bunting saw her claim a hat-trick of victories in the 1919 GN Touring in the Club’s annual Lakeland Trial this past weekend.
On dominant form again, she piloted the feisty chain-driven cyclecar – the day’s oldest competing machine – to a third consecutive Bridge Trophy title ahead of a high-scoring capacity entry. Despite some wet and testing conditions and heavy rainfall at times throughout the day, she dropped a mere three points during the event, with her total of 297 enough to place her clear of her closest rivals.

As expected, the chasing pack included a number of the regular challengers, with David Golightly’s Ford Model T and the Austins 7s of Matt Johnston and Donald Skelton all at the sharp end of proceedings amongst the Short Wheelbase cars. There was a slight surprise in the Standard Class standings as Will Odell
proved a popular winner in his impressive Riley Redwinger, getting the better of Julian Hill’s Austin 7 and perennial table-topper, David Leigh’s Frazer Nash Interceptor.

Paul Jeavons made a successful defence of his Long Wheelbase crown in his Vauxhall 30-98, taking the Kirkstyle Plate in a close battle with Gareth Frank’s Lea-Francis P Type and the returning Ford Model A of John and Jerome Fack. Dennis Bingham’s own Model A was the pick of the Standard cars, well ahead of Mike Littlewood’s similar model and the Dodge 129 Fast Four of Robert Frankcom.

The loss of the Beck Wythop complex due to scheduled felling by the Forestry Commission meant there were a number of new sections amongst this year’s total of 14 – soon reduced to a dozen by the loss of two hills early on – whilst there was also a change to the format, with hills to be completed in sequence and no walking of sections prior to attempting them. The approach proved a resounding success as the event ran with notable efficiency with the majority of the day’s 100 entrants finishing well before the scheduled 4.00pm deadline.

Huge credit must be given to the organising team of Alan Couper and John Gill, whose months of hard work paved the way for a successful Trial, led on the day by Alan and his exemplary team of Officials and Marshals. As well as those loyal VSCC regulars, we also thank volunteers from Fell Side Auto Club, Ilkley Car Club, Middlesborough Car Club, Hexham & District Car Club, MG Car Club and the Preston & District Car Club, as well as Motorsport Students from Myerscough College in Preston and a team of young VSCC Members led by Charlie Martin.

We also thank the Landowners, Lake District National Park and Honister Slate Mine, who again allowed us the use of the ever-popular Drumhouse section as well as the National Radio Bank for their support network on the day.

Provisional Results from the day are now available to download from the Lakeland Trial Event Page (CLICK HERE). A selection of photos from the event is also now available to view in the gallery on the Event Page and more will be added as they are received.
