Come and enjoy our New Year Driving Tests at Brooklands this weekend!

Friday 30 January 2015

This weekend will again bring together two stalwart organisations of Pre-war motorsport – the Vintage Sports-Car Club and Brooklands Museum, the historic birthplace of British Motor Sport and Aviation – for the Club’s annual New Year Driving Tests.
We have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship dating back to the 1930’s and we are delighted that the historic venue will welcome us once more.

The event is frequently seen as the ideal event to ‘blow away the cobwebs’ after the Winter break – save those hardy souls who have already braved the season for our overnight Measham Rally earlier this month. Following on from a record turnout for the Club’s Winter Driving Tests at Bicester Heritage in December, we look forward to another impressive entry of over 60 Pre-war Touring and Sports-Cars for this favourite event on the Club’s calendar, who will tackle 14 tests located around the famous site, including Test Hill, the Banking and the Finishing Straight.

Unusually, there are no Edwardian entries this year so Peter Cobb’s 1921 Salmson Tourer fills the mantle of elder statesman, whilst Mark Garfitt’s well-known 1937 Frazer Nash/BMW 319/55 can be found at the other end of the age scale – a car boasting actual period Brooklands history. Less surprisingly, it is the humble Austin 7 which dominates the rest of the day’s entry; from the tidy Chummy to the sporty Ulster models, the celebrated British marque is well represented, reflective of its popularity within VSCC circles.

Amongst an entry filled with a host of other celebrated British Pre-war manufacturers such as MG, Morgan, Morris, Riley and Frazer Nash, Alex Pilkington’s exquisite Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 and the Bugatti T13 Brescia of Edmund Burgess add some European flair, alongside a debut competitive outing for Nick Bell’s 1928 Amilcar C4.

As always, spectators are expected to attend in their hundreds, many in their own Pre-war machinery. The assembled display, in addition to the Museum’s other celebrated attractions including the recently restored Stratosphere Chamber and even the brand new 4D Theatre make the day a fantastic day out for all the family (see www.brooklandsmuseum.com for more information).

Access to the Museum site is from 9.00am, with Morning Tests starting at 10.00am, a Lunch Break approximately 12.45-1.30pm and a scheduled finish of 4.00pm.
