CULTURED CLUBS PROVE IT’S HIP TO BE SQUARE

‘Car Club Square’ will evoke British Motor Shows of the past at the London Classic Car Show at the ExCel (18-21 February), where one complete hall will be transformed into a scene resembling past motor shows in their glorious heyday.

Drive around many of London’s discreet Squares and you might find the occasional interesting classic parked up beside the pavement.
But if you don’t want to leave your car spotting to chance, there’s one London Square that’s guaranteed to be packed with desirable, cherished and rare classics. It’s ‘Car Club Square’ and you’ll find it at London’s ExCeL centre.
The cars are being displayed by their owners, all of whom are enthusiastic members of owners clubs: among the marques and models represented will be Aston Martin, Jensen, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Bristol, Gordon-Keeble, Audi quattro, BMW and Chevrolet Corvette while the Porsche Club will be exhibiting in the Show’s main hall.
Of course, the sight of all these highly prized classic cars might spur visitors on to buying their own classic… and the organisers of the London Classic Car Show have got that covered too.
Car Club Square also will feature Memory Lane, where dealers and private owners will be offering affordable classics for sale (though, naturally, there will also be the chance to spend six figure sums on super rare blue-chip classics elsewhere in the show).
There will even be handpicked experts on hand to offer advice about taking the plunge. Another area of the hall is being turned into Speaker’s Corner where knowledgeable specialists will be holding regular seminars discussing topics such as classic car values, how to pick future classics and how to buy (or sell) at an auction. Champagne producer Joseph Perrier, meanwhile, will be holding tastings so buyers can find the perfect tipple to celebrate their purchase.
Several famous faces will also be appearing at the Speakers’ Corner open forum, notably rally driving legend Ari Vatanen (bottom left with son Max) at mid-day on Friday and racing legend Sir Stirling Moss (bottom right) at mid-day on Saturday. Moss will be interviewed by Simon Taylor about his latest book Stirling Moss – My Racing Life and will be signing books afterwards.
“The London Classic Car Show will be full of rare and highly valuable classic cars – for example, our special display of McLaren F1 supercars is estimated to be worth £50 million – but we are making sure there are plenty of affordable cars available for anyone thinking about joining the classic car movement,” said event director Bas Bungish.
“Car Club Square is the perfect opportunity for visitors to talk to owners about the cars and to get advice on how and what to buy.”
Organised by Brand Events, the company behind CarFest and Top Gear Live, show tickets start at £23 (including booking fee) for single adult entry on Friday, Saturday or Sunday and rise to £65 for entry to Thursday’s Premium Preview Evening. Sought-after Premium tickets are available for all four days and include fast track entry, the best views of The Grand Avenue at the Turning Circle Viewing Platform, access to the exclusive Premium Lounge, a Show Handbook and even a glass of Joseph Perrier Champagne.
