Brescia score top marks on muddy 2013 Herefordshire Trial

Mags Diffey won the 2013 Herefordshire Trial by a nail biting margin of 1 point to Austin 7 driver, Donald Skelton. Mags, driving her beautiful 1924 Bugatti Brescia took the advantage on Goodwins Rise on Sunday, scoring a commendable 10 points against Skelton’s 3, worried that she might have lost the advantage after Saturday’s sport by failing off the stop re-start on Dean’s Place.
The damp conditions on Saturday made for touch sections, but all of the 100 competitors relished the challenge. On Sunday the event escaped the snow and rain that plagued the country, the seven Sunday sections were enjoyed in bright sunshine. Whilst sporting fixtures were effected across the country due to the bad weather, the VSCC once again proved that Pre-war motoring can be enjoyed in any weather!
Nicholas Topliss added another award to his tally winning Class 1a for short wheelbase standard cars to Steve Fathers’s rare Batten V8. Repeating his success on the recent Derbyshire Trial, Dennis Bingham won the Long wheelbase standard car class in his 1930 Ford Model A, 10 points ahead of Derbyshire Trial organiser and fellow Ford Model A driver, Andrew Staples.
Norman Lloyd came out on top in the stiff Bentley 3/4 ½ litre dominated battle for overall honours in Class 2, beating 22 year old Frank Collings by only 9 points. Paul Jeavons completed the 1st class roll call in Class 2b (long wheelbase modified and special cars) in his Vauxhall 30-98 tourer despite clouting a rear wing on Saturday.
Hicky Hickling was a worthy winner of Saturday’s marshals’ draw, rolling his sleeves up to marshal at ‘Foxhalls’ after he had to withdraw his Dodge from the event with mechanical issues. Alan Palmer won Sunday’s draw, marshalling at the trial winning deciding hill, Godwins Rise. Thanks to all of the marshals who gave up their time at the weekend. The Club also extends its thanks to the generous landowners who provided ground for the sections.
The next VSCC Trial is the Scottish Trial on Saturday 13 April. Entries are open now.
