Scottish Trial Provisional Results & Photo Gallery are now live

Members can now download Provisional Results from the Scottish Trial, the finale of the Club’s extended 2016/17 Trials Season, which took place this past weekend on the McCosh Estate at Culter Allers, Lanarkshire on Saturday 8 April.
The stunning landscape in and around the town of Biggar in the Scottish Borders was bathed in glorious Spring sunshine as the Club’s dedicated Competitors enjoyed a spectacular day of trialling, incorporating no fewer than 14 sections in total. But it was testament to the setup skills of Jock Mackinnon, Martin Jelley and the organising team that the day still proved a real motoring challenge despite the favourable weather.

After a couple of disappointing results recently by his high standards, regular front-runner Matt Johnston clearly arrived in determined mood to end his season on a high note and duly delivered the day’s only maximum score of 350 in his Austin 7 to claim overall victory and the Campbell Trophy, closely followed by his usual nemeses – Don Skelton, already having claimed the Hagerty Trials Championship in his Austin 7, and the ever-present Ford Model T of David Golightly.

Joining the familiar trio in the 1st Class standings of the Modified/Special Short Wheelbase Class, there was a welcome award for young ‘hot-shot’ Hughie Walker, who is quickly getting to grips with the unique Austin VAT 69 Special.

Continuing his good form over recent events, Jonathan Miller was a clear winner of the Long Wheelbase Class on the day in his Chrysler 66 Sports, receiving the McCosh Trophy, with welcome silverware for the Austin Franklin Special of Tim Kemp and for outgoing Club President, Tim Kneller’s Morris Bullnose Oxford.

The latter will prove a particularly poignant result as the Scottish was the only event Kneller had not managed to compete on during his 3-year tenure as President.

As expected, a head-to-head battle ensued in the Standard Short Wheelbase Class between Charles Gillett and David Rushton, with the former’s Bugatti Brescia taking the spoils this time ahead of the MG M Type. A lone entrant amongst the Long Wheelbase cars, John Dobson’s Ford Model A also received a 1st Class award for his efforts.

It was an emotional day for local Competitor, Malcolm Gordon as he drove his father, Stewart’s Austin 7 following his passing earlier this year, to claim the Sammy Davies Cup for the top performance by a Scottish-domiciled citizen. An award won many times by Stewart, most recently last year, Malcolm piloted the familiar orange Chummy to success, just ahead of teenager, Thomas Adams making his own VSCC debut sharing the similar Austin Chummy of Sebastian Welch.

Although not enjoying his best result in Scotland, early calculations of the Provisional Results suggest Paul Jeavons did enough to reclaim top spot in Frost Trophy standings in his Vauxhall 30-98, joining Skelton as the winners of the extended 2016/17 Trials Championships – final results to be confirmed soon.

As ever the Club would like to thank Jock Mackinnon, Martin Jelley and the organising team for yet another fantastic event, as well as the event’s other officials for their part over the weekend and also the many volunteer Marshals, who again gave up their time to oversee the competition.
