2017 VSCC Speed Season begins at Curborough this Bank Holiday Weekend

Saturday 29 April 2017

The VSCC is set for its traditional Speed Season curtain-raiser this Sunday 30 April, with the Club’s long-standing Curborough Speed Trials at the home of the Shenstone and District Car Club, near Lichfield in Staffordshire.
First held in 1964, the celebrated Curborough Speed Trials have been a feature of the Club’s events calendar for over half a century and will surely be another wonderful day of Vintage motorsport this Sunday. Once again, the day will mark the start of the Club’s Speed Championship, which will incorporate ten rounds of the Club’s most popular Sprint and Hill Climb events throughout the 2017 season.

Always one of the most popular events of the year, the day has attracted yet another full entry of over 100 Pre-war Racing and Sports-Cars, with over 30 revered Pre-war marques on display. From Edwardians to Vintage and Post-Vintage Thoroughbred, all the celebrated eras of Pre-war motoring are represented.
Andrew Howe-Davis pilots the day’s oldest entry in his 1911 Scat Racer, and young Annie Walker continues the family tradition as she makes her VSCC debut amongst the Pre-1918 machinery in her 1913 Peugeot Bebe.

Newly elected Club President Geoff Smith is tipped to challenge for top Sports-Car honours as he returns to action in his Frazer Nash Super Sports, with perennial challenger Greg Lerigo’s Riley Special and James Topliss in the GN Gnome amongst his closest rivals. Expect to see plenty of action throughout all the classes as Competitors battle for points towards the annual Championship standings, whilst intermarque bragging rights will be hotly contested, with strong representations for several manufacturers, including Alvis, Austin, Frazer Nash, GN, MG and Riley amongst others.

An undoubted Curborough specialist, Carl Gray is returns as hot favourite amongst the small capacity Racing Cars in the Hardy Special, and could again battle the higher powered machinery for the overall ‘FTD’ title. He is likely to face stern competition in the form of some of the Club’s leading Speed event exponents. Terry Crabb and Ian Baxter lead the Post-Vintage challenge in ERA R12C and Alta respectively alongside David Pryke who debuts his Frazer Nash Shelsley, whilst a host of Pre-1931 Vintage machines will also be in the mix, including David Leigh’s GN Spider – a participant in the first VSCC Curborough – Charlie Martin’s Morgan ‘RIP’ Special, Tony Lees in the famed AC/GN ‘Cognac’ and last year’s winner, Tom Walker in the Amilcar-Hispano.

Located 2 ½ miles north-east of Lichfield in the centre of the country and a short drive from the A38 at Fradley, Curborough provides a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for all visitors, whilst all are encouraged to bring their picnics, as per the Bank Holiday tradition.

Practice Runs start at 9.00am, followed by Lunch Break, with Competitive Runs in the afternoon. Tickets are available on the gate at a cost of just £10 per person, while Under 16s go free.

We also take this opportunity to remind VSCC Members that the Club Office will be closed this coming Bank Holiday Monday.
