VSCC Hertfordshire Tour 2017 – Entries Closing Soon

Tuesday 27 June 2017

Entries close soon for this year’s VSCC Hertfordshire Tour, taking place in Barkway Village near Royston on Saturday 8 July, open to all Pre-1941 cars driven by Club Members.
Similarly to last year’s inaugural event, the Tour will start from a listed farmhouse in a conservation area just 35 miles due north of Charing Cross, taking in some great Vintage driving in the North Hertfordshire countryside with fine views of the rolling Northern Chilterns, whilst we also visit flatter parts of both Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

The route totals 85 miles but there are short-cuts if you wish to dally at a stop-off and almost all the day’s route is 'yellow' roads. We have optional stop-offs at Vintage establishments, major historic buildings and non-oily places of interest, including:

Wimpole Hall, which you pass near to, is a mansion built 1640 onwards and home to six Earls, two Viscounts and finally Rudyard Kipling’s daughter. This weekend it hosts a major ‘History Festival’ with speakers including Andrew Marr and Lucy Worsley amongst ten others. It will be very, very busy but entry to the event is free to National Trust members (lectures must be booked in advance – unfortunately  we have no special connection) www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wimpole-estate/features/wimpole-history-festival-2017 or www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wimpole-estate

Old Warden is a complex of three things and entry to the site is free of charge. The airfield and hangars house the large Shuttleworth collection of Pre-WW2 aircraft and cars (almost all of which are in full running and/or flying order), the newly refurbished Georgian garden, called the Swiss Garden, which is very disabled friendly and, finally, the ‘big house’ which has recently returned to the group having been leased to Bedfordshire Council as an educational establishment. We have reserved parking and picnic area, discounted entry to either or both parts and, if you are buying a meal, a free hot drink each on presentation of your voucher www.shuttleworth.org

Jordan’s Mill is where Jordan’s cereal bars etc (or at least some of them) are made. There is a visitor centre, a cafeteria with outdoor terrace, a mill where tours can be pre-booked and a garden which contains examples of all the cereal crops and many of the ingredients which they use, plus of course a shop where they sell, at very reasonable prices, these cereals and ingredients. Ample parking at the second car park (see route book on day). John Jordan (grandfather of the owners) was a racing driver in the 1950s and one time was an owner of Lola. They have promised to dig out stuff from the archives and set up an exhibit in the display area of the shop. Please try to support their efforts www.jordansmill.com

Raceworks Motorsport in Steeple Morden are mainly into Post-war cars but they have included Mille Miglia entries. Nice guys; tea offered (see route book)  www.raceworksmotorsport.com/services

Finally, end destination on our tour is at Blakeney Motorsport where Patrick Blakeney-Edwards is opening his extensive race preparation workshop. The biggest toy shop I have ever seen. Exactly what will be there is uncertain, but what is certain is that you will be blown away by some of the twenty or so cars he is preparing for the upcoming Goodwood Revival. Teas and cakes and a friendly welcome are assured. www.blakeneymotorsport.com

En route you will also pass several pubs good for Lunch, and several village greens ideal for a picnic. Petrol is available in the village at the start and there is also petrol near the finish, as well as en route.

The Tour starts at 10.00am; with trailer parking available, near but not at the start venue.

Entry Fee: £27.00 per car (including complimentary tea/coffee refreshments at the Finish)

Entries close at the end of day this Sunday 2 July.
