Another Roaring Success at VSCC Prescott Speed Hill Climb

Tuesday 08 August 2017

The Vintage Sports-Car Club’s annual Prescott Vintage Speed Hill Climb summer weekend proved another roaring success, with many thousand Pre-war enthusiasts descending on the famous Gloucestershire venue for two days of top class Hill Climb competition and host of other Vintage attractions on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 August.
The long-standing event at the home of the Bugatti Owners’ Club is firmly cemented atop the Historic motorsport calendar, with the first weekend of August each year a ‘Mecca’ for followers of the Club’s activities, as this year’s events attracted a capacity entry of the finest Pre-war Racing and Sports-Cars in action across the weekend, with the event also counting towards the VSCC Speed Championship.

Amongst the capacity entry of 268 competitors, the eventual victor of the Fastest Time of Day awarded at the event was Ian Baxter after a nip and tuck battle with Nick Topliss who was attempting to defend his title from 2016. The pair tied on best run times of 41.44 seconds, but Baxter took the spoils on countback as he was faster on the first competitive runs. However, in the very best traditions of the Club and in a true show of sportsmanship Ian Baxter asked to share the Mays Berthon Trophy, awarded exclusively at Prescott for the Fastest Time of Day, with Nick Topliss.

There was another familiar face amongst the rest of the winners of the day’s prestigious silverware, as Andrew Howe-Davis delivered yet another Edwardian victory in his imperious 1911 Scat Racer, taking the Sam Clutton Memorial Trophy crown.

Edmund Burgess claimed the prestigious Peter Hampton Tankard for fastest Bugatti, an important award at the home of the BOC.

The event’s annual Scrutineering award – the Silver Con-Rod Trophy – was awarded to Paul Collis, whose Sunbeam Twin Cam Tourer was deemed the best presented car by the Club’s fastidious team of scrutineers.

Away from the track, there was plenty to keep visitors entertained throughout the weekend. The Club’s Principal Associates, Bonhams provided another impressive line-up of Pre-war cars. For those looking for something a little more modern, Porsche Centre Tewkesbury were on hand with a fine display of their latest models and were kind enough to supply the course cars.

Younger enthusiasts enjoyed the Club’s annual Bicycle Races, again opening Sunday’s track activities, with the awards kindly sponsored by Merry Printers and each young participant received s special VSCC t-shirt supported by Tom Hardman Cars Ltd. There were also free Giant Games, Hill Climb Simulator and sweets/games stall.

The Club would like to thank our BOC hosts, and all Competitors, Spectators and the dedicated team of Marshals, Officials and other volunteers whose hard work ensured another safe and enjoyable weekend of Historic motorsport.

The Vintage Sports-Car Club is delighted to confirm the date for next year as 4 / 5 August 2018. So you can add this to your diary.
