2010 is off
to a great start for the Vintage Sports-Car Club.
The ‘Spring Start’ at Silverstone on
Saturday
24 April has attracted bumper grids and will undoubtedly be one of the
best
value Vintage and Historic Race meetings of 2010.
The event gets underway at 9.00am for first
practice, the first event
is at 11.45 am (the Regularity
Trial for Pre-war cars) and the first race
is the GP Itala and Lanchester Trophies race at 11.15pm which starts an
afternoon events with
capacity grids.
The title
race of the day, the GP Itala and
Lanchester Trophies Race for Pre-1930 Racing cars is bursting
with Bugattis
with no less than seven of the French flyers lining up to take on the
English
leviathans. Pink
Floyd drummer, Nick
Mason will be behind the wheel of his 1937 Type 35B car. Popular racer, Mark Walker
has completed a
three year restoration of a 1905 Darracq 200 HP and will make its
racing debut
with the VSCC in this race.
A wealth of
rare machinery will race in the Patrick
Lindsay and Amschel Rothschild Trophies Race for 1931
– 1961 front engines
racing cars, a poignant event as it is 25 years since the passing of
Patrick
Lindsay and thus the quarter century celebration of the running of this
race. The Italian
flag will be flown in
support of Umberto Rossie de Montelera’s Alfa Romeo Tipo B,
Julia de
Baldanza’s Maserati A6 GCM, Simon Edward’s Maserati
4 CM and David Bennett’s
Maserati A6 GCM. Paddins Dowling flies in from America to race his ERA
R10B, a nice warm up
ahead of his race at Monaco Historic the following weekend. The Brooke ERA Special
also makes in welcome
return in the hands of Tim Metcalfe.
Another Monaco entrant,
Joaquin Folch will be looking
for a good warm up race in his Lotus 16.
The Fox and Nicholl Trophy Race for
Standard and Modified Pre-war sports-cars will be supported by a
recreation of
the Fox and Nicholl Tolworth garage in the paddock, complete with
competition
Talbots, organised by the Talbot Owners Club.
The Hubert Fabri Type 59 Bugatti is the star of the race
but the
supporting cast is equally mouthwatering.
Lagonda, Talbot, Frazer Nash, Invicta, Alfa Romeo,
Lea-Francis ,
Bentley, Delahaye and Aston Martin are all represented.
The historic ‘White Riley’, of Raymon
Mays
fame will also be competing in the hands of American owner, Ian Landy.
The 1950s Sports Racing Cars Race has once again attracted a
capacity grid and
two young racers make their debuts in this event.
Miles Griffiths, 21 of Stourbridge in the
West Midlands, a previous Sports 2000 competitor pilots a 1959 Rejo
Climax and
17 year old Oliver Llewylyn, former Ginetta Junior championship and
youngest
holder of an MSA International
Race Licence makes his VSCC debut racing his father Tim’s
1956 Tojero Jaguar. Oliver
is a pupil at
Eastbourne College and has had to
have special
exemption to leave school for the weekend in order to compete! 22 year old Roderick
Spollon is also
competing in his 1956 Cooper Bobtail. How
will these hot shots fare against the seasoned racers of the likes of
Nick
Mason, (Maserati T61), Julian Majzub (Sadler Mk111)
and John Clark
(Cooper Bobtail).
The Historic Grand Prix Cars Association race for Pre
1966 Grand Prix Cars
will be an unmissable
element to the day. You
will be able to enjoy watching some of
the top European Historic Racers in action; but the race is wide open
as many
of the top performers have their cars packed up and ready for Monaco
Historic
next weekend. Seasoned
racer John Harper
knows his Cooper T51 inside out and will be hoping to fill the top spot
on the
podium that he enjoyed last year at this event whilst driving his Brabham BT4.
Ian
Ashley had many great placings
with his LDS/Alfa
Romeo last year so expect a good performance but Mark Piercy is also
looking
good with his Lola Mk4 now sorted but we expect Enrico Spaggiari to be
up there
as well. There are
some 'newcomers'
appearing too: Nick Fennell in the fantastic Lotus 24, Jan Biekens in a
beautiful yellow recreation Ferrari 156, Annie Templeton and Hans
Hubner in
Cooper T51s, Joe Fairley in a Cooper T53, Will I'Anson in his BT10
Brabham and
recently appointed HGPCA Chairman, Barry Cannell will be out for the
first time
in his Lola Mk3. This is the Association's first race meeting of 2010,
their
next race will be at Dijon in June. See www.hgpca.com
for more details.
The Silverstone Trophy Race for Pre-war Special
Sports-Cars sees a real mix of machinery on the grid and will
make for an
interesting race.
The Regularity Trial for Pre-war Sports-Cars
has a strong line up including many first time racers and lady drivers. There are also two Scratch
races and two
traditional format Handicap Races for Pre-war cars to complete the line
up of
11 great races.
Tickets on
the gate cost £11 per person, children under 16 are free.
Advanced tickets are available
to VSCC members at £8 each with a buy one get one free offer
(so in effect £4
per ticket!). Call
