Across the USA in a 1904 Oldsmobile

On 13th April 2013, VSCC member Joy Rainey and her Team will leave Oceanside, California to drive coast to coast across the USA, a distance of just under 3000 miles in a 109 year old Oldsmobile to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.
Joy, better known for piloting faster cars, has successfully participated in speed hill-climbing events throughout the UK for many years, and recently long-distance rallies with her partner and co-driver Trevor Hulks.

This Coast to Coast adventure was to be the couple’s most challenging, however sadly in 2009 Trevor was diagnosed with cancer and passed away. Joy said, “A few months after Trevor’s untimely death I was contacted by Gary Hoonsbeen of the CDO Club in the USA who gently suggested that I might consider undertaking the trip myself as a tribute to Trevor. My reply was ‘I never say never’, but in my heart then, I did not think that I could take on such a challenging trip without my soul-mate”.
Now after considerable soul searching and encouragement from friends and family, Joy has decided that it feels like unfinished business. Therefore on 13th April 2013 she will start the Coast to Coast USA trip from Oceanside to Daytona Beach arriving on 13th May 2013 in her 109 year old Curved Dash Oldsmobile. Joy’s goal is to raise £20,000 for Cancer Research.
Unlike a modern vehicle the 1904 Oldsmobile is built high like a horse carriage where the driver and passengers sit on, not in, without any protection from the elements. The Oldsmobile will encounter an enormous range of conditions, from 6,500 ft high mountains to blisteringly hot deserts. And with a top speed of just 20 to 25 M.P.H. Joy will not only be able to enjoy the scenery, but at that speed possibly smell the flowers and hear the birds sing, as she merrily chugs along.
Joy will be accompanied by her team members, Jim Carr, Mark Riley and Nick Cooper as well as David Winstanley from RallyTV who will film the entire trip.
