VSCC Speed Season draws to a close at Goodwood this weekend

Our Autumn Sprint will bring another fantastic VSCC Speed Season to a close at the famous Goodwood Motor Circuit tomorrow, Saturday 25 October. A sunny day is forecast and entry is free to Spectators so why not join us for the end of season celebrations?
The Club’s 80th Anniversary Year has seen another packed calendar of almost a dozen Speed Events that have taken us from Silverstone for the Pomeroy Trophy in February to this weekend’s finale at the revered Chichester venue. In between, we have celebrated a milestone 50th Anniversary of the Curborough Speed Trials, a star-turn on the Mercedes-Benz World Circuit as part of the Brooklands Double Twelve Motorsport Festival, the Club’s first ever visit to the famous Santa Pod Raceway for the Club’s 80th Anniversary Sprint and a spectacular three days at Prescott in August, which included a well-received Friday event using the long course – yet another first for the Club.

This weekend will see yet another capacity entry of over 100 Pre-war and Historic Racing and Sports-Cars take to hallowed Goodwood – notorious for its challenging, fast and flowing airfield circuit – for their final track activity of the year. Spanning almost half a century, there is sure to be machinery on display to meet all tastes, from the Edwardian 1913 Daimler Mercedes Rennwagen GP to rear-engined 1957 Cooper Type 41.

As with all VSCC events, the day is very much a family affair with numerous head-to-head battles on the cards; amongst the younger drivers, Michael and Alex Lees will share the family Austin 7 Ulster TT in Class 1 as father, Tony looks on from the seat of the mighty Vauxhall Viper Special whilst Matt Ricketts lays down the challenge to father Duncan sharing the Cooper in the Post-war classes. Eyes will be on husband and wife duo, Simon and Jo Blakeney-Edwards, who have been top performers all year in their Frazer Nash machines whilst Neil Twyman plies his impressive 2.6 litre supercharged Alfa Romeo 8C against the equally exquisite 6C model of Sir Clive Martin, driven by his brother Craig.

The weather gods promise a fine and dry day so expect to see plenty of Class Records to tumble. Graham Beckett will have his eyes set on a new Vintage Record in Class 8 as he enjoys a first outing to the ex-Barry Clarke Austin Simplicity whilst perennial table-topper, David Pryke will hope to end another stellar campaign with a dominant performance in Class 9 with his Riley 12/4 Special. Expect a battle royale between Dougal Cawley in the infamous GN/Ford Special ‘Piglet’ and Ewen Getley’s Bentley 3/4½ Litre in the large capacity Special Sports-Cars Class whilst it will be hard to pick a winner amongst the half dozen small capacity Racing Cars of Class 13.

As for the FTD challengers, it is difficult to look past the usual contenders with Sue Darbyshire, triumphant in the rain last year in her Morgan Super Aero, Robert Cobden in the formidable Riley Falcon Special, the ever-improving Julian Grimwade in the Frazer Nash Norris Special and that car’s previous owner, James Baxter, who will look to cement his dominance of the Club’s Speed standings in Nick Topliss’s ERA R4A. Look out for a most welcome return of sister car R7B too, now in the hands of Julian Wilton – is there a better place to make your competitive debut in an ERA? We wish him and all the day’s competitors a most enjoyable day!

Spectators are most welcome to attend and entry is free, although we do ask that you support us and purchase an event programme on arrival!

Parking is also free with a dedicated area outside the circuit for Classic vehicles whilst those arriving in Pre-war Cars will be directed to the inner paddock parking area. Catering facilities will be available on site, alongside Trade Stands and the Club Display, selling a selection of our Regalia range as well as the Club’s 2014 Christmas Card “And this will be the sign” (a very special design by Richard Wade for our 80th Anniversary Year) – just in time for the festive season!
