VSCC return to glorious Cheshire to honour Mike Hawthorn at Oulton Park tomorrow

Friday 20 May 2016

Following the resounding success of our ‘Spring Start’ season opener at Silverstone, we now turn our attention to our Hawthorn Memorial Trophies Meeting at Oulton Park, taking place tomorrow Saturday 21 May, where we will continue the stellar start to the Club’s Race Season!
Last year saw the Club make a triumphant return to Cheshire following a 4-year absence, with a fantastic weekend of Vintage motorsport, including an AutoSolo, Concours so we are delighted to have the celebrated venue back on the calendar for a one-day event in 2016.

This year we run on the full ‘International’ configuration of the circuit – incorporating the loop extension – with laps now reaching a length of 2.69 miles, making this the longest lap on our Race calendar and providing a new challenge for Competitors. The traditional VSCC ‘Sets’ for all Pre-war cars will feature, with our new Novice Race taking centre stage, alongside Invited guest grids from the HRDC, 500 Owners Association and Morgan Three Wheelers.

The VSCC Hawthorn Memorial Trophies are amongst the Club’s most prestigious silverware, with some of the trophies the very same awarded to the great Mike Hawthorn. Vintage Racing Cars (Set 1) will contest the Boulogne Trophy Race – the highly prized bronze statuette a favourite of the Club’s collection for many. If last year’s edition is anything to go by, this will be another classic feature with wheel-to-wheel action guaranteed.

The Hawthorn Memorial and Spanish Trophies Race has been a VSCC feature for 30 years, and will again accommodate our Pre-1961 Racing Cars (Set 2) in another stunning Pre- and Post-war gathering.

The Bill Phillips Trophy Race is sure to attract another full grid of Standard & Modified Pre-war Sports-Cars (Set 3) whilst the Special Pre-war Sports-Cars (set 4) will enjoy the Oulton Park Trophy Race.

As ever, Pre-war fans will also enjoy full grids competing in the ever-popular All-Comers Pre-war Short Scratch (Set 5) and Handicap (Set 6) formats.

New for this year, we’re excited to offer a Novice Short Scratch Race; the same format as our popular ‘Set 5’ events, this race is specifically aimed at those Club Members who are newer to racing with the VSCC and looking to gain some more track experience in their Pre-war Racing or Sports-Car.

The VSCC 2016 Race Season will also see a host of invited grids as part of each of our race days, with a number of celebrated Clubs and Series scheduled to take part; at Oulton Park we look forward to welcoming F3 (500) Racing Cars, always a popular addition to the Paddock and the Morgan Three Wheelers, a change from their traditional spot at our annual Cadwell meeting.

We also host two grids from the HRDC, including their celebrated ‘Allstars’ for Pre-1966 Sports, GT & Touring Cars and ‘Academy’ including the HRDC A-Series Challenge for BMC A-Series-powered Cars.

Aside from the action on track, our day at Oulton Park will again offer the Spectator all that is great about attending a VSCC Race Meeting, with free access to the Paddock, where you can get up-close to the cars and drivers, an AutoSolo competition – taking place during the morning – the traditional Cheshire Life Concours, onsite catering facilities and a busy Trade Village – whether looking for that vital car part for your own restoration or finding a gift for a Motorsport enthusiast, you are sure to be able to find something.

Amongst the other 'Vintage' themed highlights organised by our MSV hosts will be a static display Spitfire with Merlin engine demonstrations throughout the day, an Air Display, traditional Pimms & Cream Tea Tent, Children’s Funfair and Live Jazz Band.
