Star Cars Announced for Showcase Event. Brooklands Double Twelve Motorsport Festival

Friday 01 March 2013

Brooklands Museum and the Vintage Sports-Car Club have released advance details of some of the star acts for this year’s Brooklands Double Twelve Motorsport Festival on 15-16 June. At the official Press Launch for the event held yesterday it was announced that the Double Twelve Speed Trials sprint competition to be held on the Mercedes-Benz World circuit on Saturday 15 June will include a special class for the BMC Mini Cooper S, which was launched 50 years ago. The Cooper S had already been listed as a star class for the Double Twelve Driving Tests to be held on Sunday 16 June.
To add further spice to that event, the famous Brooklands single-seater, the Bentley Pacey-Hassan Special (recently returned from Japanese ownership), was on show in front of the Clubhouse to confirm its new owner’s intent to run it in the Speed Trials competition.

Other marques with significant anniversaries which will be honoured at the Double Twelve include Aston Martin and the Vauxhall 30-98 (both celebrating centenaries) and the Mercedes-Benz SL ‘Pagoda’, celebrating its 50th. Examples of all these were on display at the Press Launch – and demonstrated their sporting credentials as members of the press were treated to live experience of competitive driving tests from either the passenger’s or driver’s seat. A favourite was John Littman’s ‘Works’ Mini Cooper S, which proved fastest of all in a light-hearted competition in the Brooklands Paddock. And further experience of the flavour of the Double Twelve festival was provided with a master class in Concours judging by Rolls-Royce expert Malcolm Tucker, with Italian motoring writer, Peter Collins being judged the best of his pupils.

The structure of the competitions is changing at this year’s Festival to encourage entrants to enjoy a full weekend of motoring action, but the beauty of this new system means even if a competitor can only attend on one day, then there is still an opportunity to come and compete in any single competition.

There are three stand-alone events:

•             The Double Twelve Speed Trials on the Mercedes-Benz World Circuit on Saturday
•             The Double Twelve Concours held on Saturday and Sunday
•             The Double Twelve Driving Tests on Sunday

Each event will have its own class and overall winners, but to qualify for a Brooklands Double Twelve award, an entrant must compete in any two of the three events and the combined scores of these two events will decide their Double Twelve placing. This means that a car may be entered for the Speed Trials on Saturday and then the Driving Tests on Sunday.  Alternatively a car could be entered in the Concours on Saturday and take part in the Driving Tests on Sunday and a car could also enter the Speed Trials on Saturday and be judged in the Concours on Sunday.

Entry forms for all the competitions are available to download on the VSCC webiste click here and then go inot individual listings for the Sprint and then Concours and Driving Tests  . For further information on the Double Twelve Concours, contact Nic Waller at nic@nicwaller.co.uk or call 0787 551 6817.  Once again the Vintage Sports-Car Club will be organising the Speed Trials and the Driving Tests, so for further information about these events, please contact the VSCC Competitions Department on comps@vscc.co.uk or 01608 644777 Ext 4
