VSCC 2013 Hill Climb Season is go!

Friday 10 May 2013

The Club is delighted to get this year’s Hill Climb season underway with our annual Wiscombe Park event taking place this Sunday 12 May, near Honiton in Devon. A full entry of 130 Pre-war and Historic Sports and Racing Cars will descend on the stunning grounds of Wiscombe House, home to the Chichester family since 1953 located east of nearby Ottery St Mary, just north of the Jurassic Coastline, to take part in one of the Club’s most popular events.
At approximately 1000 yards (914 metres) in length and with an average gradient of 1 in 13.6 – the steepest section at the Martini Hairpin is 1 in 6.9 – the course is one of the most challenging and enjoyable in the UK; long, quick straights, tight hairpins and a changing open to tree-lined track, it is a delight for the driver and spectator alike.

This weekend’s entry is brimming with quality with over 30 revered Pre and Post-war marques represented amongst the day’s 15 classes, including examples of this year’s ‘centurions’, the Vauxhall 30-98 and Aston Martin. Competition is sure to be prevalent throughout, with several awards for the taking within each capacity class. Of the many highlights, we are excited to see the Cooper Special of David Morgan out in action with the VSCC for the first time – ‘Number One’ was built by Charles Cooper at Brooklands in 1937 for his son, John Cooper’s 14th Birthday, and still uses the original ‘Flying Flea’ aircraft engine – whilst other members makes their own Club debuts, including Douglas Huntley in his Bugatti Type 30 and young Stephanie Wilton following in the footsteps of father Julian and grandfather Gerald (who also competes today) in her Austin 7 single-seater. A host of VSCC regulars will be eager to get one over their rivals at this early stage of the season, including reigning Hill Climb Champion, James Baxter; erstwhile Frazer Nash pilot, he competes for the first time in ERA R4A, which he will be campaigning alongside owner/racer Nick Topliss this year. Delighted to see the car back in action with the VSCC after years abroad, it has already enjoyed a busy few months with outings at Silverstone and Donington – will James continue his dominance of VSCC Hill Climbs aboard the celebrated voiturette racer?

As well as the track action, spectators will be able to enjoy free access to the Competitors’ Paddock at the bottom of the hill where they can see the cars at close-hand and talk to the drivers, along with a number of Trade Stands and hot/cold catering facilities and licensed bar – be sure to purchase your ice-creams early as they will sell out fast! Sunday’s action will get underway with Practice Sessions run in batches from 9.00am up until Lunch Break at approximately 1.00pm. The afternoon’s Competitive Runs will commence at 2.00pm and will run in Class order with each driver getting two timed runs.

Tickets are £12 (VSCC Members) or £15 (Non-Members) on the gate and Under 16s go free. Come and enjoy one of the Club’s most well-loved and friendliest events.

Wiscombe Park (OS MR 192/185924) is located north of Blackbury Castle, west of Southeigh village. Follow 'AA' signs from the A3052 near Sidmouth and from Honiton (Sat Nav use EX24 6JE).
