Fathers' Day Weekend celebrated in style at the Brooklands Double Twelve Motorsport Festival - Results now Live

Wednesday 19 June 2013

Results from the three elements of the Double Twelve Festival – the Speed Trials, Driving Tests and the Concours – which took place this past weekend at Brooklands Museum over 15/16 June are now available. Click HERE to download these and results of the Overall Double Twelve Competition for those who entered any two of the events.
Saturday’s Speed Trials on the technical handling circuit at Mercedes-Benz World saw a familiar name top the leaderboard with the famed ERA R4D of Mac Hulbert mastering the inclement weather to take Fastest Time of Day in 42.05 secs. Dr David Pryke set the fastest time by a Sports-Car of 45.93 secs in his Morgan/Riley 4/4 Special, Ewen Getley was the day’s fastest Vintage Car in his grand Bentley 3/4½ Litre in 47.00 secs and Sue Darbyshire cemented her place as the day’s fastest Lady Driver in a new class record time of 47.05 secs.

Sunday’s Driving Tests saw a truly wonderful, eclectic mix of Pre- and Post-war cars take on the 7 tests spread over the historic site of Brooklands Museum, including the famous ‘Test Hill’ – ever a favourite of drivers and spectators alike – and the original concrete ‘Banking’. The more nimble and agile machines darted between and around the mazes of straw bales, whilst drivers of some of the more larger tourers displayed their own driving prowess, all putting on a stellar show for the large crowds. With Double Twelve scores based on performance within class, competition was rife throughout, whilst the ever-agile Mini Cooper S of Lee Champion gave the day’s Best Performance.

Throughout the weekend, those cars entered for the Concours were judged by an expert panel of Judges who scored each entry on the usual criteria of originality and presentation of interior, body, engine and chassis in addition to a more subjective score for historical interest, desirability and character – all in keeping with the ‘Spirit of Brooklands’. Scores (out of 100) went towards the overall Double Twelve Competition whilst each Class Winner also received an award. Unsurprisingly, it was the exquisite prototype-bodied Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 of Corrado Lopresto who most impressed the judging panel and, whilst not the most practical car for the Driving Test competition, certainly entertained the spectators and topped the scores of the Concours event with a score of 89.

Come Sunday afternoon and the end of the weekend’s competitive elements, the sun shone brightly on the Brooklands Museum Clubhouse as the top scorers of the overall Double Twelve eligible entries (those who entered any two of the three elements) were gathered together for the Judging Team to select their final winners. The 1935 Aston Martin MK II of David Bracey was victorious following consistently strong performances in the Driving Tests and Concours. Fellow VSCC member, Mark Garfitt took second in his 1937 Frazer Nash/BMW 319/55 Sports, a Brooklands winner in 1937 whilst the 1962 Jaguar E Type of Neil Manley came third. Additional awards were presented to Corrado Lopresto for the top Italian entry in his Alfa and young Amelia Wooding was the weekend’s top Lady Driver in the family MG Midget MK II, taking part in the Driving Tests and Concours.

The VSCC and Brooklands Museum would like to thank all the marshals and volunteers who assisted over the weekend. The event is becoming a ‘must do’ in the Pre-war and Historic motoring calendar and will return again in June 2014.
