Bouncing Brescia Bugatti Back in Action for VSCC Prescott Speed Hill Climb

Monday 29 July 2013

A Vintage Bugatti Brescia that found itself in the mainstream and social media spotlight has been restored in rapid time, and is ready to return to competition at the Vintage Sports-Car Club’s Prescott Speed Hill Climb Meeting on 3-4 August, thanks to a skilled team of Bugatti experts.
Edmund Burgess was competing in the car at the Bugatti Owners’ Club ‘La Vie en Blue’ hill climb meeting last month and was catapulted to fame after the car went into the ‘Esses’ carrying too much speed, clipped the barrier and turned over. A member of the press caught the dramatic scenes and distributed them to a press agency, so within hours, news of the accident had gone global, unwillingly thrusting the unsuspecting owner and his car into global web coverage.

Edmund walked away from the accident with just a few bruises and, remarkably, nor was the car too badly damaged because the accident occurred at relatively low speeds.  Experts in the field of Bugatti restoration came together to make the repairs needed to get the car back on the track, and the owner is thrilled that he will return to competition with it next weekend for the Vintage Sports-Car Club event at the same hill which is so celebrated within Vintage motoring circles.

Edmund said, “We are extremely fortunate that the UK has a huge pool of specialist engineers who are highly skilled in Vintage and Historic car restorations.  Bugatti Specialists, Ivan Dutton Bugatti Ltd and Gentry Restorations Ltd have helped with the re-build and Spencer Longland oversaw all the repairs. Clubs like the Bugatti Owners’ Club and the Vintage Sports-Car Club at are the core of these specialists linking enthusiasts to businesses and providing the momentum for an industry that generates millions of pounds for the British economy every year”.

Edmund also added that the incident helped him to acknowledge the skills and dedication of British marshals who officiate at motorsport events up and down the country at weekends. “The accident has allowed me to witness at first hand the professionalism and dedication of the many volunteers marshals and I would like to thank all those who give up their time to allow us to enjoy our sport as safely as possible. Ultimately the incident brought home to me the wonderful camaraderie of the old car movement from the many phone calls, texts, emails , letters and cards that I received.”

Next weekend, 260 Pre-war cars and owners from all over the world will gather at Prescott Hill, north of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire to compete at the VSCC’s Speed Hill Climb  on the testing course which has been used for 75 years as a motorsport competition venue.  Club Secretary of the VSCC, Mike Stripe commented, “We are expecting several thousand visitors, many of them in Pre-war road cars, to the event next weekend which, for many, is the pinnacle of the Vintage car year.  The finest Pre-war cars will be in action, the majority of which are nearly 100 years old.  Each car will have utilised one or more of the many companies and experts who specialise in spares and repairs of these historic vehicles. Without them, events on the scale of Prescott would not be able to happen”.

Advance ticket sales for the event close tomorrow, Tuesday 30 July, and tickets are available on the gate priced at £15 per person on Saturday, and £25 per person on Sunday.  Children under 16 go free.
