Silverstone ‘Spring Start’ More than just a Race Meeting

Friday 05 April 2013

Obviously the on-track action is the main attraction for any enthusiast joining the VSCC at Silverstone for the first Historic Motor Sport Festival of the 2013 season, however, there is more to this meeting than watching over 400 Pre-war and Historic cars take over 700 grid starts to battle for the spoils in 22 races.
Free Paddock Access
All visitors are welcome to wander freely around the Paddock, with no entry fee or passes required. This allows you to get up close to the cars which have been performing on the track and chat to owners who are only too quick to share the history and their knowledge of their machines. This is a truly wonderful way to immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of historic racing.

Drive It Day
Don’t forget that Sunday 21 April is National ‘Drive It Day’. So why not use this as the perfect excuse to drive your vintage or classic car to Silverstone and soak up the atmosphere.
Drive It Day is a national event commemorating the 64 cars that left London on the first day of the Thousand Mile Trial on 23 April 1900. The Royal Automobile Club Thousand Mile Trial started in London and passed through Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester - travelled through Scotland - then passed back through more English towns until they were back in London again. The tour lasted until May 12th and forty six out of the approximately sixty-five starting cars made it to the finish line.

Dedicated Pre-war Car Park
As always, the Club has organised a Pre-war Car Park placed in a new, larger car park this year, and adjacent to the bustling Paddock Area. Here, you can show-off or admire your favourite Pre-war machines. Always a highlight of the meeting, it’s worth a visit whether or not you own a Pre-war car.

Trade Village
With over 35 Trade Stands booked for the weekend, we are welcoming an eclectic mix of retailers to our Trade Village. With everything from cross-ply tyres to designer handbags there is something on offer for most tastes. There are a few remaining places within our Trade Village, if you are interested in booking a stand please contact Gill Batkin on 01608 644777 ext 5 or email gill.batkin@vscc.co.uk to check availability.

George Abecassis Centenary Exhibition
George Abecassis was one of the UK’s most well known and loved all round race drivers, with the weekend of the Spring Start Race Meeting marking the 100th anniversary of the year of the birth of this important driver. In celebration of his achievements there will be a dedicated race taking place on Saturday with an Exhibition showcasing cars driven-by or relevant to George within the Paddock.

VSCC Associates
Auction specialists Bonhams will be joining us with a dedicated display within the Paddock.
Routen Chaplin, who administer the VSCC Insurance Scheme will be welcoming drivers to the Pre-war Car Park and offering advice and guidance on any insurance related queries.

VSCC Club Display & Regalia
Near to the bottom of Race Control you will find the VSCC Club Display, where you can join the Club, chat with friends or purchase a wide range of regalia, including new for 2013 Ladies Quilted Jackets and the best selling ‘Best of British’ t-shirt.

Where to Watch
If all of this isn’t enough to keep you busy, then why not watch the action from the grass banks on the inside of Copse all the way up to Becketts, or for VSCC Members who can show their Membership Cards, the BRDC Grandstand will be open.

Food and Drink
As usual, Silverstone will be opening the doors of its Paddock Diner, providing visitors with a vast choice of hot meals, sandwiches and drinks throughout the course of our meeting. For those visitors wishing to ‘eat on the move’ there is a sandwich and coffee outlet in the centre of the paddock area.
