New two day format VSCC ‘Spring Start’ Silverstone to be a record-breaker!

Friday 12 April 2013

Over 400 Pre-war and Historic Sports and Racing Cars, driven by over 350 different drivers totalling over 700 individual grid slots over two days – a simply mouth-watering and eclectic gathering that you can surely only experience with the Vintage Sports-Car Club!
In addition to all the usual VSCC Racing ‘Sets’, we have been able to invite a wider than usual selection of series to join us for a wonderful menu of racing. The Historic Grand Prix Cars Association is racing on both days with their Pre-1966 Grand Prix Cars grid. The 500 Owners Association is reviving a classic race for these F3 500cc Racing Cars with the Commander Yorke Memorial Trophy Race, also appearing in two parts, with racing on both days. On Saturday we will also enjoy a unique event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of that British driving legend, George Abecassis, in a grid of relevant cars assembled by the Fifties Sports Car Racing Club in addition to a static display of other cars related to the man in the paddock over the weekend. Among the grids on Sunday we welcome the Formula Junior Historic Racing Association with a grid of front-engined cars that was so popular in period and, pretty much,  ever since. Add in a grid of Pre-war Aston Martins, in recognition of that marque’s centenary year, a grid of the Historic Racing Drivers’ Club ‘Allstars’ featuring Pre-’65 GT cars, early touring cars and historic MGs, and a two-driver 35–minute race for 1950s Sports Racing Cars and the menu is already diverse.

But there’s more. As well as the usual Vintage and Pre-war Sports and Racing Car grids that the VSCC provides there is a special grid of authentic Pre-1941 Standard and Modified Racing Cars that will surely whet the appetite of any Pre-war racing fan; entries for Sunday’s race include no less than 6 ERAs, including the return of R4A to VSCC circles taking on a French challenge of 7 Bugatti T35 and T37s, whilst Tony Smith and Sean Danaher fly the Italian flag with their Alfa Romeo Tipo P3 and Maserati 6CM respectively. Our Sports-Cars are out in force with full grids as ever on both days, while the title race, the ‘GP Itala Trophy Race for Vintage Racing Cars’ will draw the crowd as Chris Williams brings the behemoth Napier Bentley to the track against familiar foes including Morgan 3-Wheelers, Bugattis and Bentley 3/4½s. The race featuring Post Vintage and Post-war Historic Racing Cars for the Amschel Rothschild Trophy and the Patrick Lindsay Memorial Trophy has attracted its biggest entry in years with reserves waiting in the wings for a place on the grid. The Post-war challenge will come from Lotus 16s, Connaughts, Cooper Bristols in their various guises in addition to the Scarab Grand Prix of Julian Bronson, two Maseratis – 250F and ‘Tec Mec’ models – and two Ferraris whilst ERA, Riley and Alta represent the Pre-war charge. And if that is not enough, many will return for Sunday’s equivalent races to battle it out all over again – we cannot wait!

Look out next week for more race previews and other news during the build up to our ‘Spring Start’ weekend.
