The High Road or Low Road? The VSCC head north for the Scottish Trial this weekend

Thursday 03 April 2014

The 2014 VSCC Trials season reaches its halfway stage this weekend as Competitors travel to Scotland for our much-loved Trial on Saturday 5 April. As the Club’s only competitive event to take place ‘north of the border’, the annual visit to the McCosh Estate in Biggar, Lanarkshire, 30 miles south of Edinburgh, is a definite highlight of the calendar; some of the UK’s most stunning landscape awaits and is worth the journey alone.
Clerk of the Course, Jock Mackinnon and his team are Competitors themselves so know what makes a challenging and fun section; early reports during setup indicate the traditional unpredictable, seasonal conditions will ensure an enjoyable and challenging day of Vintage motoring. Jock is joined this year by Club marshalling stalwart, Martin Jelley, who takes over the reins as Chief Marshal; Martin was recently named winner of the Club’s Don Grose Trophy for Non-Speed Marshalling in 2013 at the Club’s Annual Marshals’ Dinner so the event is in experienced hands.

The Trial is also a favourite for spectators, particularly amongst those more local who otherwise have to travel some distance to witness a VSCC event. They again will be most welcome to come and watch the action. Morning Hills will be open 9.30am-12.30pm with Afternoon Hills 2.00pm-4.30pm. Download a copy of the Spectator Information for full details, including locations of those Hills open to Spectators and a complete Entry List (CLICK HERE).

David Golightly made it ‘two in a row’ last time out, as he followed his overall win in our John Harris (Derbyshire) Trial with victory at the Herefordshire; no doubt he will be desperate to make it a ‘hat trick’ in his Ford Model T Special in Scotland this weekend. Matt Johnston has also been a model of consistency, scoring two 2nd and a 3rd place finish in the three events so far this year, so will undoubtedly perform well again in his Austin 7 Special whilst Louise Bunting returns from a brief hiatus at the last round to challenge in her always competitive 1919 GN Touring. With reigning Standard Class leader David Leigh absent, Charles Gillett should record his second win of the season in his Bugatti Brescia – but will he be able to mix it with the modified machinery for top honours? The Long Wheelbase Classes have thrown up a different winner in each event so far this season but only Paul Jeavons has the chance to double-up this weekend as he enters his Vauxhall 30-98 as a trio of Ford Model As battle for top Standard car.

We wish all those taking part, Competitors, Organisers and Marshals another wonderful VSCC weekend.
