VSCC to celebrate yet another milestone in 2014 at Curborough this Bank Holiday Weekend

Friday 02 May 2014

This Sunday 4 May, our traditional Speed season curtain-raiser at Curborough will mark the historic 50th Anniversary of the Club’s celebrated Speed Trials at the Shenstone and District Car Club’s venue near Lichfield in Staffordshire. With a full entry of over 100 Pre-war Racing and Sports-Cars and almost 30 revered Pre-war marques showcased, it is sure to be a wonderful day’s Vintage motorsport.
In his event report for the Autumn 1964 edition of the VSCC Bulletin (No. 83), John Willis wrote ‘A new event in the Club Calendar is always something to look forward to, in the hope that it will acquire its own special atmosphere – something which distinguishes so many VSCC meetings and helps to make them so enjoyable.’ After a half a century, there is certainly no doubt that Curborough has cemented its place in VSCC folklore, with its perfect combination of enjoyable and challenging motorsport and relaxed Garden Party and Picnic atmosphere.

The inaugural event attracted an entry of fifty-five across the then six classes and, in true VSCC tradition, we are delighted to see a number of those cars originally entered back out on track this weekend, including the 1930 Frazer Nash Falcon of Westie Mitchell, Stephen Curtis’s 1928 Frazer Nash Boulogne, the perennial VSCC Speed event winning Norris Special now of Julian Grimwade and Basil Davenport’s iconic 1923 GN Spider, a Class Winner in 1964, piloted today by David Leigh, Competition Secretary of the Frazer Nash Car Club.

That first event also welcomed two revered ERA machines in the shape of R1A (A.G. Murray) and R1B (A.L. Cottam); maintaining the close association between the Club and marque in this our shared 80th Anniversary year, this weekend will also boast two of the Lincolnshire voiturettes, with R14B, shared by Donald Day and Paul Richardson and Mac Hulbert’s R4D – the latter returns to defend his title and will be tough to beat. As ever, the day offers a most eclectic entry full of quality, including the day’s oldest machine in Richard Black’s 1903 Panhard-Levassor S4M and a host of original Pre-war machinery (classified as ‘Standard’ by the VSCC) comprising an incredible third of the day’s entrants, from manufacturers as Alvis, Riley, Bugatti and more.

Conveniently situated 2 ½ miles north-east of Lichfield in the centre of the country and a short drive from the A38 at Fradley, Curborough provides a welcoming atmosphere for all of its visitors.

Practice Runs start at 9.30am, followed by lunch, with Competitive Runs in the afternoon. Tickets are available on the gate at a cost of £10 per person, while Under 16s go free. And in celebration of the 50th Anniversary, those purchasing an Event Programme will also receive a copy of the 1964 version.

VSCC Members are reminded that the Club Office will be closed on May Bank Holiday Monday.
