50th Anniversary Curborough Speed Trials Final Results and Photo Gallery Now Live

Thursday 08 May 2014

Final Results from the 50th Anniversary Curborough Speed Trials, which took place on Sunday 4 May, are now available to download.
As anticipated, a bumper crowd were on hand at our Curborough Speed Trials and they were treated to another vintage day of motorsport as the Club celebrated the significant milestone.  We were particularly delighted to gather a quintet of Frazer Nash/GN cars that all competed at the very first event in 1964 (illustrated).

Fittingly, the action on track proved a thrilling spectacle, a wonderful tribute to this long-standing event. The day’s top four performers were separated by just 0.2 secs with Ian Baxter victorious in his 1935 MG Bellevue Special with a Best Time of 37.11 secs, his first FTD with the VSCC. He was a mere 0.06 secs ahead of Paul Richardson in Donald Day’s ERA R14B, which enjoyed a very popular return to the VSCC paddock after a season away. He, in turn, just edged the day’s other ERA, Mac Hulbert’s R4D on 37.21 secs ahead of last year’s winner, Robert Cobden, only a further tenth behind in his Riley Falcon Special.

Competition was fierce throughout the entirety of the day’s entry, with a number of close results, including in the Class for large capacity Standard & Modified Sports-Cars, where John Guyatt triumphed over Marcus Black in the battle of the Talbot-Lago machinery by a half second. There was a similar story in the large capacity Special Sports-Cars Class, where Jo Blakeney-Edwards’s Frazer Nash Shelsley got the better of Mark Walker in the GN Thunderbug, who combined with son Hughie (Martyr Frazer Nash Special) and Bruce Stops (Bugatti T35/44) to win the coveted Team Award. A successful day for the ‘Chain Gang’ was epitomised by Frazer Nash Car Club Competition Secretary, David Leigh, who scored Fastest Time of Day amongst the original ‘64 Entrants in the iconic GN Spider whilst young hotshot, Charlie Martin continued to impress, setting a new Vintage record of 38.36 secs in Justin Maeers’s 1930/28 Morgan ‘RIP’ Special.

As ever, our thanks go to Julian Ghosh, Jim Adams and their VSCC Midlands Section organising team and to all the Competitors, Officials and Marshals for their part in yet another memorable Curborough Speed Trials.
