Wiscombe to welcome the VSCC for the start of the 2014 Hill Climb Season

Friday 09 May 2014

One of the most popular disciplines within the VSCC, there is little surprise that our Wiscombe Park Hill Climb will welcome another fantastic entry this Sunday 11 May to celebrate the start of the Club’s 80th Anniversary Hill Climb Season. Over 100 Pre-war and Historic Racing and Sports-Cars will descend on the stunning grounds of Wiscombe House, home to the Chichester family since 1953 located east of nearby Ottery St Mary, near Honiton in Devon, to take part in one of the Club’s most popular events.
In addition to the Club celebrating its historic 80th year, anniversaries are somewhat en vogue in 2014 and we recognise a number of other milestones amongst the weekend’s entries. Local man Terry Crabb represents ERA with R12C and will be looking to celebrate the revered marque’s own 80th birthday this year in style with a Fastest Time of Day. The challenge is sure to be fierce, however, with returning Wiscombe champion, Rob Cobden in his mighty Riley Falcon Special, a front runner again. The Sussex-based pilot’s racer is one of eighteen examples from the celebrated Coventry manufacturer, apt as the Riley Register marks its 60th Anniversary. Others to keep an eye on include Ian Baxter in the MG Bellevue Special, following his stunning victory – his first with the VSCC – at our 50th Anniversary Curborough Speed Trials last week, as well as young Charlie Martin, who continues to impress, setting a new Vintage record at the Staffordshire venue in Justin Maeers’s unusual Morgan ‘RIP’ Special.

At approximately 1000 yards (914 metres) in length and with an average gradient of 1 in 13.6 – the steepest section at the Martini Hairpin is 1 in 6.9 – the course is one of the most challenging and enjoyable in the UK; long, quick straights, tight hairpins and a changing open to tree-lined track, it is a delight for the driver and spectator alike.

As well as the track action, spectators will be able to enjoy free access to the Competitors’ Paddock at the bottom of the hill where they can see the cars at close-hand and talk to the drivers, along with a number of Trade Stands, hot/cold catering facilities and licensed bar – be sure to purchase your ice-creams early as they will sell out fast!

Sunday’s action will get underway with Practice Sessions run in batches from 9.00am until the Lunch Break at approximately 1.00pm. The afternoon’s Competitive Runs will commence at 2.00pm and will run in Class order with each driver getting two timed runs.

Tickets are £12 (VSCC Members) or £15 (Non-Members) on the gate and Under 16s go free. Come and enjoy one of the Club’s most well-loved and friendliest events.

Wiscombe Park is located north of Blackbury Castle, west of Southeigh village. Follow 'AA' signs from the A3052 near Sidmouth and from Honiton (Sat Nav use EX24 6JE).
