Wiscombe Park Hill Climb Final Results Now Live

Tuesday 13 May 2014

Final Results from the first VSCC Hill Climb of the season at Wiscombe Park, which took place on Sunday 11 May, are now available to download.
It proved another classic day of VSCC Hill Climbing, as Wiscombe Park once again played host to the Club’s opening round of the season in this our 80th Anniversary year. The picturesque venue based in the grounds of the Chichester Family home in Devon was as welcoming as ever, the paddock busy with competitors and spectators alike, excited as always for the VSCC’s annual visit.

After the thrilling action of our Curborough Speed Trials only a week earlier, we were again treated to a fantastic day of competition, with closely fought battles throughout the day’s classes. As expected, the venue’s unique ‘micro-climate’ played its part, with intermittent showers through the day requiring drivers to be at their very best; a number were caught out by the slippery conditions of the greasy track – clearly only a near-perfect run would prove enough. Nowhere was this more evident than for Rob Cobden in his Riley Falcon Special; following drama in the morning Practice Runs, including fuel level issues, a spin on his first Competitive Run heaped pressure on the returning 2013 Champion before he finally put together a stellar ascent and defend his Fastest Time of Day title with a time of 49.92 secs. This was just enough to see him best the fast-improving Julian Grimwade, who gave an impressive first Hill Climb outing in the Frazer Nash Norris Special, a perennial winner in the hands of former owner and VSCC Hill Climb Champion James Baxter, his time of 50.11 secs enough for second place overall ahead of Terry Crabb in ERA R12C.

A three-way battle for Fastest Vintage closely followed the top trio, as VSCC stalwarts Tony Lees (AC/GN Cognac) and Sue Darbyshire (Morgan Super Aero) just lost out, as young hotshot Charlie Martin in the Morgan ‘RIP’ Special followed his Vintage Record setting performance at Curborough with yet another impressive showing. Elsewhere, David Pryke cemented his place as erstwhile Sports-Car frontrunner in his ultra-quick Morgan/Riley Special whilst old adversaries Dudley Sterry and Jo Blakeney-Edwards were again neck-and-neck, the HRS man pipping the Frazer Nash Shelsley pilot by just 0.09 secs in Class 10. Richard Ashford topped the Post-war standings in Ruth Ross’s 1948 Cooper T9, just over a tenth of a second ahead of Phoebe Rolt’s Elva Formula Junior.

As ever, our thanks go to our team of local Club Members for their efforts promoting the event, and to all the Competitors, Officials and Marshals for their part in yet another memorable Wiscombe Park Hill Climb.
