Stunning entry to descend on Brooklands for the Double Twelve Motorsport Festival this weekend

Entries for the annual Brooklands Double Twelve Motorsport Festival portend exceptional battles looming between past winners and new challengers in all three competitions to be held during a full weekend of activities at the Birthplace of British Motorsport and Aviation in Weybridge, Surrey this weekend.
Last year’s overall winner of the Double Twelve competition, David Bracey, has substituted an Aston Martin DB6 for 2013’s victorious Pre-war Aston in an attempt to retain his title, while the outright course record-holder for the Double Twelve Speed Trials on the Mercedes-Benz World circuit, Mac Hulbert, will be defending his crown with his famous ERA single-seater R4D. And Amelia Wooding, last year’s Double Twelve Ladies Champion, will be striving to repeat the feat in her MG Midget Mk II. Aiming to topple these established stars will be a host of contenders driving cars ranging from aero-engined Vintage racers to Ford Mustangs – many of them in astounding concours condition to prove that the most competitive machines can be beautiful too.
Held over the weekend closest to the date on which the original track opened in 1907, the Brooklands Double Twelve Motorsport Festival is a two-day extravaganza featuring Speed Trials, Driving Tests, the prestigious Double Twelve Concours and Test Hill ascents, alongside family-friendly entertainment and activities. Using the extensive historic Museum site and the facilities at neighbouring Mercedes-Benz World this weekend, Spectators and Competitors will be able to enjoy a huge variety of motoring action.
Challengers to Mac Hulbert’s ERA in the Double Twelve Speed Trials include Terry Crabb’s sister machine ERA R12C, and a host of nimble lightweight machines like the Morgan Three Wheelers and Frazer Nashes, ideally suited to the twists and turns of the MB World track. Two Pre-war Aston Martins with impeccable Brooklands history – the Halford Special and Razor Blade – will face up to other famous Brooklands racers like the Bentley Pacey-Hassan and Ian Baxter’s MG Bellevue Special. And to bring the competition up to date, a brace of giant-killing BMC Mini Coopers will do battle with their Pre-war counterparts.
In the Double Twelve Driving Tests, entries range from tiny Austin 7s to Robin Beech’s vast Rolls-Royce aero-engined Handlye Special (a perennial tyre-smoking favourite of spectators on the Test Hill), while four Post-war Mercedes Benzes will be up against the likes of David Morgan’s Cooper Special Number One, built by Charles Cooper in 1937 at Brooklands for his son John’s 14th birthday. This remarkable car still has its original ‘Flying Flea’ aero engine. Bidding for honours in this competition will be a previous Ladies’ Champion, Jo Moss- Kitcher, hoping her powerful Morgan Plus 8 will outperform Amelia Wooding’s agile little Midget.
The Double Twelve Concours features many of the cars which will be competing in either the Speed Trials or the Driving Tests: the three Frazer Nash/BMWs entered include Mark Garfitt’s 319/55 Sports with original Brooklands history, and Julian Grimwade’s mighty Frazer Nash Norris Special Single-Seater will provide a real contrast to Massimo Delbo’s 1980 Ferrari Berlinetta, Hugh James’s Ogle SX 1000 and Andrew Atherton’s Austin 1800 S, the latter entry marking the 50th Anniversary of the launch of the famous BMC ‘Landcrab’.
The Classes across the three competitive elements reflect more anniversaries and milestones in marque history that feature in 2014 as well as paying homage to the heritages of both Brooklands and event co-organiser, the Vintage Sports-Car Club. Most notable are the 50th year of the Ford Mustang and the centenary of Henry Ford’s declaration that he would make his cars in “any colour, so long as it is black”, with a special class for ‘Fords in Black’.
Entrants will enjoy an inclusive hospitality area in the charming, period splendor of the Edwardian Clubhouse, the chance to drive on motoring ‘hallowed ground’ and when competing, will be in the capable hands of the VSCC and Brooklands marshals.
The Test Hill Challenge will take place on both days and involves everything from Sinclair C5s, bicycles and motorcycles to giant Pre-war racing cars, car clubs and running races for energetic children up the punishing 352ft (107m) concrete slope. Also on both days, Stunt Drive UK will be demonstrating dramatic slides and pirouettes with their classic Minis in front of the grandstand by Test Hill.
A day ticket for the Saturday or Sunday entitles the visitor to come along to the Saturday evening event in the Clubhouse, where things will really start to rock with premier ‘50s band Conrad and the Atomiks.
