VSCC Statement Regarding Fatality at Snetterton

The Vintage Sports-Car Club has confirmed that a competitor died following injuries sustained during a racing accident at Snetterton circuit in Norfolk, on Sunday 29 September 2013.
Stephen Jewell, aged 63, left the track in his 1924 Bugatti T35B and sustained serious injuries when the car impacted with the crash barriers. He was treated by the circuit’s medical services team and was then transferred to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital by road ambulance but he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

The accident occurred on Sunday morning during Practice for the Seaman Memorial Trophies Race Meeting organised by the Vintage Sports-Car Club. Snetterton Circuit is owned and managed by MotorSport Vision.

The relevant authorities have been informed and a full investigation will be carried out into the incident. As with any serious incident in or around UK motorsport, the MSA, the organising club and the circuit operators are now working closely with the police and other agencies to establish precisely what happened on this occasion.

The Motor Sports Association, the Vintage Sports-Car Club and MotorSport Vision extend their deepest sympathies to Mr Jewell’s family and friends.

Mike Stripe, Chief Executive of the VSCC, commented:
“Stephen was an experienced competitor in many disciplines and well known within the motorsport community.   The Club offers its sincere condolences to all of Stephen’s family and friends following this tragic incident”.

No further statement will be issued at this time.
