With the Peak District bathed in sunshine, our annual John Harris event welcomed yet another full entry as the 2013 VSCC Trials season continued with aplomb. The new start/finish venue at Ashover Parish Hall proved a huge success with both Signing-On and Scrutineering working seamlessly, and the ‘Bacon Butties’ proving a hit with the Competitors and Marshals.

The unexpectedly mild and sunny weekend certainly helped dry many of the customarily tricky sections – the infamous Beeley Plantation a muddy exception – as the Trial proved a high-scoring affair. Don Skelton continued his excellent start to the VSCC Trials season in his Austin 7 with his second overall victory, clearing 12 of the day’s 14 sections and taking the Dick Batho Trophy with a score of 330, pushed close by regular front-runners Kraig Mycock in his Riley and Frazer-Nash Section Captain Louise Bunting in her GN in Class 1b for Modified & Special Short Wheelbase Cars. Another member of the ‘Chain Gang’ came out on top on Class 1a (Standard Short Wheelbase Cars) as Tom Walker scored 320 in his GN, including a ‘clear’ of Beeley, one of only 4 the entire day. Of the Long Wheelbase Classes, the Ford Model A proved the weapon of choice, as Dennis Bingham prevailed amongst the Standard Cars, with a score of 267 whilst Stephen Longden finally ended his own 20 year wait for victory, taking Class 2b in his modified Speedster Model, and taking the Patrick Marsh Trophy with a total of 319.

Following the retirement of long-time Clerk, David Hill, the new team of Stephen Fathers and Andrew Staples took the reins for the first time this year, ably supported by John Harris Trial stalwart, Anthony Costigan, and are congratulated for delivering a truly successful day. For a number of months, they have worked tirelessly, sourcing new venues, negotiating with landowners and planning a great trial. We also thank the rest of the team, Tina, Cheryl and Jane for managing Ashover Hall (raising £375 for the Army Benevolent Fund with sales of food & drink) and all the day’s volunteer marshals who stood out all day – for a nice change – in the sunshine. As always, our events could not happen without them!
