Why Historic Cars Need To Be Used, Not Just Preserved
Saturday 01 August 2026
The VSCC has always championed active use. Discover why driving, competing and maintaining historic cars is one of the best ways to preserve them for future generations.
Historic vehicles survive because people use them.
While museums and collections play an important role, many of the world's most significant vintage cars remain alive because enthusiastic owners continue to drive, maintain and compete in them.
That philosophy has been central to the VSCC since its foundation in 1934. The Club was created not simply to admire old cars, but to ensure they remained active participants in motoring life.
Regular use brings practical benefits. Mechanical components stay lubricated, faults are identified before they become serious, and specialist engineering skills continue to be exercised and passed on.
Just as importantly, use keeps knowledge alive.
Every journey, trial, rally, speed event and tour helps preserve an understanding of how these machines operate, how they were intended to perform and what makes them unique.
A car that remains in use also remains visible. It inspires future enthusiasts, demonstrates engineering history in motion and creates opportunities for new generations to engage with historic motoring.
For the VSCC, preservation and use are not competing ideals. They are partners. The most effective way to preserve many historic vehicles is often to ensure they continue to do exactly what they were designed to do: drive.
