VSCC enjoys an epic start to 2014 season with the Measham Rally

Monday 20 January 2014

Provisional Results and Photos from the VSCC Measham Rally are now available to Club Members.
With crews, marshals and organisers now back  home, early reports would indicate that this past weekend’s Measham Rally was an overwhelming success with all praising both the enjoyable challenge of the route and the extremely professional organisation of the event team.

According to Provisional Results, the seemingly unbeatable pairing of James and John Potter retain their title by the narrowest of margins from Gareth Frank and Ali Proctor on the ‘furthest, cleanest’ ruling – pending any changes,  a fourth Measham Trophy victory in a row for the Thirsk-based family in their Alvis 12/50.

Winners of the Jeddere-Fisher Trophy were John Fort and team in a Riley 9. A special mention must also go to our two finishing Austin 7 crews in this class, the plucky 747cc machines beating the odds to deliver well-deserved class awards; amongst them, Past Club President Barry Clarke, who reportedly competed in his 52nd Measham Rally this year, navigated by David Filsell. Both have been members of the VSCC since the early 1950s and were the undoubted heroes of the ‘day’.

Our Semi-Expert Class proved competitive with Richard Marsh and Tim Cork taking victory in their 1923 Vauxhall 30-98, the oldest car entered in the event, also combining with the Frank/Proctor duo and the Star 12/40 Pegasus of David Moroney and Robert Bunn to claim the Winning Team accolade.

And in the Novice Class, former Club Membership Secretary showed that he is enjoying the early days of retirement, taking victory with navigator Dick Goodman in their 4¼ Litre Bentley whilst Richard Matthews and co-driver showed persistence was the key as winners of the Champagne Class for newcomers in their Frazer Nash.

We would like to thank all crews for supporting the event by taking part and congratulate all those who finished the challenge, and commiserate those who did not. We would also like to thank our organisers, Bob Chapman, John Gill and their team for their months of hard work and preparation, culminating in what many are describing as an ‘epic’ Measham event. Our thanks also go to local residents, our start/finish venue at the Holiday Inn Scotch Corner for their hospitality and the MOD for use of the Catterick Ranges, which proved a most enjoyable part of the route.

But we reserve the biggest applause for the vast number of marshals, both VSCC Members and from local Car clubs who managed the 60+ controls and other duties throughout the night. They epitomise the true spirit of both this fantastic event and our wonderful Club and its friends.

An outstanding start to the Club’s 80th Anniversary Year – long may it continue!
