High Profile Historics support Hawthorn Memorial and Spanish Trophies Race at Pembrey this weekend.

Wednesday 14 August 2013

A quality grid of historic racers that are more commonly seen gracing the larger historic events in the UK and on the continent will be in action at Pembrey this weekend for the Vintage Sports-Car Club’s Hawthorn Memorial Trophies Race Meeting.
Philip Walker comes fresh from dominating the Historic Grand Prix Car Association races for Pre 1961 Grand Prix Cars at the AVD Old Timer Grand Prix at the Nurburgring in Germany. Not only did Philip put his 1959 Lotus 16 on pole for the race, he also took two victories in two hard fought 14 lap races.  He is the favourite for the outright race win and the Hawthorn Memorial Trophy, but he faces stiff competition from a threatening pack of ERA’s.
Mark Gillies flies in from the USA to exercise Mary Smith’s ERA R2A which was last driven competitively in the UK in 2007 and more usually competes in the USA at the Monterey Historics event at Laguna Seca. He is supported by Mac Hulbert in ERA R4D who is bolstered from his hard fought ‘Fastest Time of the Day’ achievement at the VSCC’s Prescott Speed Hill Climb, the most prestigious Pre-war hill climb in the world, only a fortnight ago. Terry Crabb gives his ERA R12C onelast airing ahead of an appearance at the Goodwood Revival this coming September.  Another rare treat will be Christopher Mann’s stunning Alfa Romeo P3 which made a welcome return to VSCC racing at Cadwell Park in June.
The ‘Blue Diamond’ of Riley is represented by the duo of Pete Candy (1936 ‘Super Rat’) and Robert Cobden (1937 Falcon Special) whilst the ‘Chain Gang’ have three representatives, Eddie Gibbs in his 1935 Frazer Nash Single Seater, Justin Maeers in his 1926 GN Parker Special and Robert Carr in his 1930 GN/AC Special. Not to be discounted are the two Wolseley Hornet Special racers, Tim Greenhill and Rodney Seber.  Their 1934 racers will be lapping the 1.46 mile Pembrey track at blistering speeds.  Who out of the Pre-war brigade will get their grasp on the prestigious Hawthorn Spanish Trophy? Julian Wilton and Nicolas Rossi are the final two Post-war Historics vying for the Hawthorn Memorial Trophy.
The Hawthorn Memorial and Spanish Trophies Race is Race 9 in a programme of 11 races that get underway from 1pm this Sunday at Pembrey following morning practice.  There is action on circuit on Saturday too with 90 Pre-war cars competing in a Sprint followed by a dozen teams in a Pre-war Sports-Car Team race.
Tickets for spectators cost £10 on the gate on Saturday and £12 on Sunday. Children under 16 go free.

The circuit is located adjacent to the Pembrey Forest and the Irish Sea just south of Kidwelly.  It is only twelve miles from Junction 48 of the M4 Motorway and a total of 90 miles, (therefore under 2 hours) from the Severn Bridge.  Pendine Sands, including the Museum of Speed where ‘Babs’ is housed is only 30 miles away to the west.
